Quangos blackball… oops, sorry… veto ‘racist’ everyday phrases

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

It could be construed as a black day for the English language — but not if you work in the public sector. Dozens of quangos and taxpayer-funded organisations have ordered a purge of common words and phrases so as not to cause offence. Among the everyday sayings that have been quietly dropped in a bid to stamp out racism and sexism are “whiter than white”, “gentleman’s agreement”, “black mark” and “right-hand man”. The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission has advised staff to replace the phrase “black day” with “miserable day”, according to documents released under freedom of information rules. It points out that certain words carry with them a “hierarchical valuation of skin colour”. The commission even urges employees to be mindful of the term “ethnic minority” because it can imply “something smaller and less important”.

Ireland makes blasphemy illegal

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

As part of a revision to defamation legislation, the Dail (Irish Parliament) passed legislation creating a new crime of blasphemy. Update: The bill went to the Seanad on Friday, July 10, passing by a single vote. This attack on free speech, debated for several months in Europe, has gone largely unnoticed in the American press.

How does this impact free speech? Just don’t be rude.

■Atheists can be prosecuted for saying that God is imaginary. That causes outrage.

■Pagans can be prosecuted for saying they left Christianity because God is violent and bloodthirsty, promotes genocide, and permits slavery.

■Christians can be prosecuted for saying that Allah is a moon god, or for drawing a picture of Mohammed, or for saying that Islam is a violent religion which breeds terrorists.

■Jews can be prosecuted for saying Jesus isn’t the Messiah.

Is it really THAT big a deal?

Schools bar parents from sports day to keep out paedophiles

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Parents were banned from attending an inter-school sports day to protect pupils from kidnappers and paedophiles. The host school said they could not prevent ‘unsavoury’ characters from sneaking in. More than 270 pupils from four local primaries took part in the East Beds School Sports Partnership Athletics Day at Sandy Upper School in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire last week. Youngsters aged seven and eight competed in the long jump, hurdles, sprint, 400 metres and relay races. Their parents, many of whom wanted to take time off work to attend, condemned the ban.

One mother, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘They said they just could not estimate how many parents were going to be there, and were worried that they couldn’t stop someone who shouldn’t be there from being there. But I think it’s just health and safety gone mad.’ Mother-of-three Emma Collett, 33, of Biggleswade, has a child at St Andrew’s Lower School in the town. She said: ‘I would have taken time off work to support my child. It would have meant a lot to me. I’m all for measures to protect the safety of children but lines must be drawn and common sense must prevail.’

Paul Blunt of the East Bedfordshire School Sports Partnership, which ran the event, said the ‘ultimate fear’ was that a child could be abducted. He said: ‘If we let parents into the school they would have been free to roam the grounds. All unsupervised adults must be kept away from children.’
